Fall Preaching Series on Heroes from Hebrew Scripture
In October and November, Pastor Campbell will reflect on four important figures of the Old Testament, Job, Ruth, Samuel, and Jeremiah.  For four weeks in October we will study the story of Job's suffering and trials, the taunting accusations of his faithful friends, Job's lamenting before God, and Job's final understanding of God's sovereignty and continual care even in the face of tribulation.  On Nov 1st (World Communion Sunday) and Nov 8th, we will reflect on the faithfulness of Ruth, the Moabite woman who stood beside her Judean mother-in-law, Naomi, and became the great-grandmother of David.  On November 15th and 22nd, we will reflect on the life of Samuel, the priest who was called to serve the Lord and later was convinced by the Israelites to anoint Saul as King.  On November 29th, (The First Sunday of Advent) we will learn about the prophet Jeremiah who warned the wicked and comforted those who trusted in God.  Jeremiah foretold Jesus' coming as a righteous branch from the shoot of David.

St. Mark Needs Volunteer Cleaning Teams
Every two weeks, usually on a Saturday afternoon, we need a team of two or more volunteers to clean two bathrooms, the Jarrett Wing kitchen area, and nursery, and vacuum in nursery and classrooms.  All cleaning supplies and equipment are at the church.  Volunteer cleaning crews are saving us over $1,000 each year in custodial fees.  Our rental groups, P'nai Or, AA, Oregon Repertory Singers, and Village Preschool, help out by doing regular vacuuming in sanctuary and Jarrett Wing and cleaning downstairs.  If you have a few hours on a Saturday that you can volunteer, please sign up after worship or call Barbara at the church.  We need people every two weeks beginning October 3rd.

St. Mark Teams Invite You to Join
The Worship Team and the Mission/Outreach Team for St. Mark is inviting all who may be interested in joining their work to come to the first Fall Meetings.  Mission Team will be meeting on Monday, Sept 21st, at 7 pm at the home of Pastor Campbell, 727 SE Rhone St. Portland, 97202.  Mission Team will be discussing Clark Center Meals, Habitat Builds, and other ways that St. Markers can be involved in mission, as well as future events that could be open to the community and potentially draw folks to find out more about St. Mark.  Worship Team plans for creative worship experiences at St. Mark.  Upcoming special worship to be planned includes World Communion Sunday on Oct 4th and Reformation Sunday on Oct 25th. Worship will also be discussing the trial with monthly bulletins.  For more information you may contact Sue Graf, Chair of Worship Team at
susan.graf@comcast.net and Ginger Edwards, Chair of Mission and Outreach at gingere@involved.com.

Y'All Come Choir for September
Beginning Sept 13 through Sept 27 there will be a "y'all come" choir rehearsing at 9:15 am and preparing for worship that morning.  Anyone who is interested in learning a simple musical piece with the choir that morning or in finding out more about what it means to sing in the St. Mark choir is invited to join us. Wednesday evening choir rehearsals will begin Wednesday Sept 30th at 7:30 pm.

Oregon Repertory Singers Rehearse at St. Mark
The well-known choral group "Oregon Repertory Singers" has signed a contract with St. Mark to rent the sanctuary every Tuesday evening from 7-10 pm for their rehearsals. Director Gil Sheely is delighted to have the perfect room acoustically in which to practice and to be making connections with St. Mark for future concerts, perhaps.

P'nai Or Sends Thanks and Raises Their Own Rent
Our brothers and sisters of the P'nai Or Jewish Renewal Community, that rent space at St. Mark on Fridays and Saturdays, voluntarily raised their rent by $100 per month.  A letter from Charlie Rosenblum, P'nai Or Treasurer, reads,

"It has been a rough few months for P'nai Or and, among other things, I want to personally thank you and the entire St. Mark community for the strength you have given us as we go through our mourning for our friend and teacher, Reb Aryeh (zt"l) and work to rebuild our P'nai Or community. I think of us less as landlord and tenant and more as neighbors, sharing our holy space in Southwest Portland.

It occurs to me that is has been a couple of years since we last had a rent increase, and I am sure costs for maintenance and utilities have increased somewhat. Also, our education committee has plans for a Wednesday evening program once or twice a month this year, so well will likely be using the church facility a bit more. The P'nai Or Council approved the idea of, and I would like to propose here, an increase of $100 per month beginning with our August 2009 rent (coinciding with our new fiscal year).

Again, building a holy space along with the St. Mark community has been a wonderful experience for P'nai Or, and I hope we can continue to grow together."

It was during St. Mark session's last budget planning meeting that Pastor Campbell received the terrible phone call about Reb Aryeh's (yz"l) death.  Our session had been discussing a possible rent increase for P'nai Or, but with the sad news, decided to postpone to a future date when their community was more settled.  This gracious gift comes serendipitously and with much joy!
