Cascades Leadership Fair

Whether you are a church officer, a staff person or a member interested in growing your faith, there is something for you at the Cascades Leadership Fair to be held Saturday, February 28, 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian, Portland.  Hear nationally known speakers and attend two of many appealing workshops.  Pick up a brochure in the office or visit the website, www.cascadespresbytery.org

St. Mark Women’s Group

February 10th at 7pm all women involved with St. Mark are invited to the home of Ginger Edwards and Bob Meehan.  The theme for this meeting will be giving and receiving support to/from each other.  Because it is so close to Valentines Day, we might utilize this option.  Please come, bring a snack, bring a project you are working on to show us your interests, or just come to sit, eat, talk, and listen.  How to get here?  Your goal is a white two story house at 6730 N. Wilbur Ave, 97217.  Generally come north on I 5 and take the Rosa Parks exit 304.  Come west/left (back over the freeway) on Rosa Parks.  You will cross the Max tracks at Interstate when the light turns green.  Count this as traffic light #1.  Traffic light #2 is Denver, keep going straight.  Traffic light # 3 is your signal to turn right at the next street Wilbur.  We are the 2nd to the last house on the right before Wilbur stops at Arbor Lodge Park.  Bob has a HUGE boat in the driveway.  Call (503) 286-4903 if you get lost!

Habitat for Humanity House Completed

In December St Mark volunteers helped on a Habitat for Humanity project that helped the La family to own their own house. This past week the La’s got the keys to their new home, and Pastor Barbara was there to enjoy the moment.

St. Mark Game Night

On Sunday afternoon, Feb 15th you are invited to join us for games and supper.  We will play board games, card games, or whatever favorite game "shows up" that afternoon.  Our previous game nights have proven to be a time for laughter and fellowship as we learn new and often hilarious things about each other.  Bring chips, salad, or dessert to share, if you wish.  A main course will be provided.  Please sign up for Game Night following worship in the fellowship hall

Middle East Peace Message

"FCNL lobbyists have learned that Congress is about to vote on a one-sided resolution on the crisis in Gaza that does not call on both Israelis and Palestinians to implement an immediate ceasefire.  Members of Congress need to hear that their constituents demand a new, bipartisan policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one that includes U.S. diplomatic talks with all of the parties involved. Including Hamas in any U.S. initiative is a key to ending the violence. Your messages are particularly important right now because the debate early in this session of Congress could set the tone for policy for the next four years."  Email your representatives through the "Contact" button on their websites:

MLK Day Service Opportunities

This week, the Presidential Inauguration Committee announced that the annual
celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be an
official part of the inauguration activities. They launched a new Web site,
USAservice.org , as a hub for events around the country on January 19th,
the day before the inauguration. Groups around the country, including faith-based groups, are hosting service opportunities. Just a few of the many opportunities being organized in the Portland Area for Monday, Jan 19th, include canvassing for food from Abernathy Park beginning at 10 am, volunteering at VOZ, an organization that empowers immigrant workers beginning at 9 am,
working with Habitat for Humanity on SE Martins from 8:30-3:30, Working with OSPIRG at a local shelter, cleaning up Laurelhurst Park, dropping off donations of food at St. Michaels, 1704 NE 43rd, or attending a presentation on "Race in Portland" at 7 pm at the First Unitarian Church, 1011 SW 12th.
For a complete list of events planned in the Portland Area go to usaservice.org and click on "Find an Event" at the top of the page.  Simply put in your zip code and a list of events will come up.

“Anatomy of Scripture” with John Salmon begins Sunday.

Like the human body, scripture is made up of a variety of parts (within the books of the Bible) — its “bones”, “flesh”, and “vital organs”, so to speak.  John Salmon will help us explore some of those parts, and how they come together to form the body of scripture, in a series of four classes that begin today Sunday, January 18, following morning worship, and continues through Sunday, February 8.  John earned a Ph. D. in Old Testament from Princeton Seminary, and was Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary before entering the pastorate.

Tragic Loss for P’nai Or Congregation.

On Tuesday, January 6, Rabbi Aryeh Hirshfield died suddenly from a snorkeling accident, while on vacation in Mexico with his family. We hold Beth, his wife, their twin 8 year old boys, Aryeh’s older son who was married in Mexico during this vacation and all of our brothers and sisters at P’nai Or in our prayers.

At 4PM on Sunday, January 25th there will be an Interfaith service, "The Power of Reconciliation", dedicated to Aryeh at Augustana Lutheran Church, at 2710 NE 14th in Portland.

Volunteers Needed to Help Clean St Mark

In an effort to reduce our expenses in this present economy, we have cancelled our twice monthly cleaning service and are looking for volunteers that would be willing to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon cleaning toilets and sinks in our two bathrooms, mopping the bathroom floor, wiping off sink area and cupboards in Jarrett Wing and vacuuming carpets and wiping off tables in classrooms and nursery.  We only envision needing to do this twice a month and with enough volunteers, you may only need to serve once or twice a year. We'd like to have at least teams of two people signed up for each cleaning to make the work more "enjoyable."  Please contact Pastor Barbara to sign up and we will assign you to a Saturday team.  All cleaning supplies and equipment will be provided along with clear directions on what cleaning is needed and where to find supplies.  P'nai Or and our AA rental groups do a good job vacuuming the sanctuary, foyer, and Jarrett Wing each week, so we will not have to vacuum very often.

St Mark Leadership Teams Looking for More Members

If you are interested in working with one of the St Mark Leadership Teams that help coordinate Worship, Administration, Building Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance, Education and Fellowship, or Mission, please contact Pastor Barbara.  There is lots to do at St Mark and many leaders are needed to help coordinate the many ministries that we are involved in.
