St. Mark Volunteer Cleaning Teams
Thank you to the following cleaning teams for February:
Brian and Leas Averill, Sue and Eric Graf, Capi Reed, Margaret Shearer, and George Watson.
March Volunteers will include Molly Keating and her crew on the weekend of March 7th (Team A) and the Abbassian Crew (Team B) on the weekend of March 21st.

We are still looking for volunteers that would be willing to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon cleaning toilets and sinks in our two bathrooms, mopping the bathroom floor, wiping off sink area and cupboards in Jarrett Wing and vacuuming carpets and wiping off tables in classrooms and nursery.  We only envision needing to do this twice a month and with enough volunteers, you may only need to serve once or twice a year.

We'd like to have at least teams of two people signed up for each cleaning to make the work more "enjoyable."  Please contact Pastor Barbara to sign up and we will assign you to a Saturday team.  All cleaning supplies and equipment will be provided along with clear directions on what cleaning is needed and where to find supplies.  P'nai Or and our AA rental groups do a good job vacuuming the sanctuary, foyer, and Jarrett Wing each week, so we will not have to vacuum very often.

St. Mark Session Minutes and Financial Reports.
Anyone who is interested in looking at previous session minutes or St. Mark monthly financial reports will find these documents posted on one of the bulletin boards in the foyer or in a notebook in the cabinet outside the pastor's office.  We hope to be able to include some of the highlights of these reports in the Good News each month, as well.
At their February 19, 2009 meeting, Session reviewed and approved the end of the 2008 year financial report and spend some extra time with Jennifer Abbassian, our church Treasurer going over our financial report form to learn how to correctly and more easily interpret the form each month.  Other business included moving the following members from our active to our inactive membership list:  Evelyn Shearer, Joe Dills, Jesse Loar, Susan Mellinger, Amber Harris, Steve Hays, and Kelly Hays.
Financial Report: As of Feb 18, 2009 total Designated Funds = $12,661.22.  Total General Checking Funds = $26,655.79.  Total Liabilities (to be paid from General Fund) = $11,570.83.  2009 Pledges received as of 2/18/09 = $11,610.  Total budgeted and unbudgeted expenses as of 2/18/09 = $10,270.94.

Clark Center Meals:
Coordinators for our meals at Clark Center during 2009 are being recruited and each of these coordinators will be recruiting their own team of volunteers to prepare and serve their meal.  The meals this year are on, Saturday, April 4th, Sunday, July 19th, Saturday, Octorber 3rd, and Sunday, December 20th.  A list of non-perishable items needed to help stock our Clark Center pantry is available at the church. People are asked to donate any of these items throughout the year as needed.  We will also be asking for donations of cash throughout the year to cover the purchasing on our perishable items for each meal.

The Women's Retreat

The Women's retreat will be held on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Hammond, Oregon next to Ft Stevens State park. The fee for retreat will be $90.  We need to have at least 19 people going. Deadline to RSVP is March 11th. (You do not need to pay to RSVP.) Please RSVP to Suzanne Chase at knittergirl@gmail.com or Pastor Barbara.

P’nai Or Teens Bake Challah.

The youth of P’nai Or are selling challah to raise money for the tzedkah (service) partners SW Community Health Center and Abir Aramin’s Garden project of Combatants for Peace.  Green order forms are in foyer. Plain Challah is $5/loaf. Orders must be in to Pastor Barbara by March 1st.  Challah will be baked on March 6th. Bread will be ready for pickup at St. Mark on Sunday, March 8th.

SW Hope “Feed the Hungry.”

The annual food drive for Neighborhood House began last week and continues through April 5th. A barrel for food donations is in our foyer. St Mark will be hanging food drive flyers and St. Mark flyers on door knobs in our neighborhood after worship and lunch on Sunday, March 15th.  We also need volunteers to deliver food from our barrel to Neighborhood House. Local restaurants are helping to support the food drive by donating a percentage of the income on specific days. Donation dates for each restaurant and the necessary coupons are available at the church on the Neighborhood House website.

Lenten Preaching Series.

During the five Sundays of Lent, which begin next Sunday, March 1, Barbara will be preaching on texts from the 14th chapter of Mark, which are part of the traditional Passion Narrative. These texts come chronologically (in Mark) after the Palm Sunday text, but since they are typically only read on Good Friday each year, and seldom preached on, we will spend time this year exploring these important stories. The texts will include the Last Supper, Jesus in Gethsemane, Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest, Jesus’ Trial, and Peter’s Denial of Jesus.

Wednesday Night Lenten Supper and Reflection.

From March 4th to April 1st, on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm, we will be gathering for a light supper and brief bible study and reflection on questions that Jesus asked his disciples during the time preceding his death. You are welcome to join us at anytime. No reservations are necessary.  Those who are interested in helping with suppers please contact Suzanne Chase at knittergirl@gmail.com.

Pastor's Message
The Annual Academy Awards celebration last night was inspirational.  It left me wondering how someplace like Hollywood is getting the message right while so many faith communities struggle with loss of membership out of sheer boredom or a rejection of their spiritual message.  I cried when movie legends like Sophia Loren and Alan Arkin introduced the nominees, one icon speaking directly to an up and coming "icon" with prophetic voices of encouragement, honor, and respect for their humanity, not just their acting skill.  I cried listening to winners thank whole cities, like Mumbai, for their indomitable spirit and compassion. But mostly, like Sue who wrote to me this week to share
Dustin Lance Black’s acceptance speech - I cried at the honoring of Harvey Milk and the love and encouragement Hollywood, at least, gave to the GLBTQ community. We can all afford to listen to Black's words over and over again.

“When I was 13 years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life. It gave me the hope one day I could live my life openly as who I am and then maybe even I could even fall in love and one day get married.

I wanna thank my mom, who has always loved me for who I am even when there was pressure not to. But most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he'd want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches, by the government or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally, across this great nation of ours.”

Grace and Peace,
Barbara

Nursery Care Update

As you know, in order to reduce expenses, we have decided to use volunteers to staff the nursery at St. Mark on Sunday mornings.  The Worship team is looking for volunteers to could contribute to this ministry to our youngest family members.

We are looking for a rotation of people who could provide nursery care about once every 6-8 weeks.  The Worship team would like the caregiver to be in the nursery by 9:45 on Sunday morning to be available as people arrive for church.  Generally, we have one or two children in the nursery on any particular Sunday.

Please let us know if you would be willing to become part of the nursery care team.  We will set up a schedule, assigning people to dates and then reassign those who cannot serve when they have been assigned.  We hope this will make it easier for people to remember when they are “on duty” as well as making sure that each Sunday is covered. Please contact Sue Graf (susan.graf@comcast.net ) or Pastor Barbara if you are interested in helping.

Thank you for considering this important aspect of our commitment to our youth!

St Mark Team Travels to India
Another team will head to central India in May to visit our mission partners at BIRDS.  Cost for the trip will be approximately $1,700/person including airfare, room, board, and ground transportation.  Projects being planned for this trip include a bio-diesel project, as well as work practicing English with boarding home children, visiting diocese boarding homes to establish future contacts with Presbyterian churches in Oregon, and observing the many integral programs of BIRDS as they seek to improve the lives of the Dalit poor. Exact dates have not been set, but we plan to be away for 2-3 weeks.  The team will live on site in modern semi-private rooms with indoor plumbing, lights, and fans. If you would like more information on the trip, or know of someone who might like to join the trip, please contact Barbara Campbell soon at 503-504-3340.

Presbyterian Summer Camps
Whether you are in Preschool or a Senior in high school, a family with young children, or retirees, the Presbytery of the Cascades Summer Camp program has something for you. This summer they are offering 14 different sessions including a day camp at Menucha, Youth camps at both Magruder on the Coast and Suttle Lake in the Cascades, and a Family camp at Honeyman State Park. Open enrollment has begun and camp brochures and registration information is available in the church office.
This year, Pastor Campbell will be Deaning the Mom and Me Camp for K-2nd graders and their Moms or Grandmoms, at Camp Magruder near Rockaway, OR over the weekend of July 17-19. The cost for Mom and Me Camp is $205 if registered before May 5 for one child and one adult.
St. Mark has a designated fund for camp scholarships for children, so please let us know if you would like some financial assistance.

St Mark Leadership Teams Looking for More Members

If you are interested in working with one of the St Mark Leadership Teams that help coordinate Worship, Administration, Building Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance, Education and Fellowship, or Mission, please contact Pastor Barbara.  There is lots to do at St Mark and many leaders are needed to help coordinate the many ministries that we are involved in.

Rummage Sale Update

As Spring cleaning begins, remember that St. Mark is already receiving boxed rummage for our 2009 August Rummage Sale.  All rummage needs to be boxed, if at all possible so that we can store the quantity we receive in the storage room in the basement.  With Preschool in session weekday mornings, rummage should only be delivered to church after 2 pm weekdays or on the weekends.
Our annual rummage sale usually brings in close to $2,500 for our operating budget and we appreciate all donations, except computers, exercise equipment, and worn clothing.  Large pieces of furniture may have to be stored elsewhere until August but are a great fund raiser.
